ICPF at the Science Fair

On 8th–10th June 2023, the seventh edition of the Science Fair took place in Letňany, Prague. This largest popular educational event in the Czech Republic, organized by the Czech Academy of Sciences, presented more than 100 stands from the world of natural sciences, engineering, humanities and social sciences. And we could not be missed. At our stand, you could learn about the research of our 4 groups (Research Group of Bioorganic Chemistry and Biomaterials, Research Group of Laser Chemistry, Research Group of Algal and Microbial Biotechnology and Research Group of Multiphase Reactors).

Visitors could see how edible microscopic algae and cyanobacteria are grown in photobioreactors. They also learned why space agencies, doctors and aid organizations in developing countries are interested in algae and cyanobacteria. At another station, visitors used simple experiments to discover how bubbles in reactors help mix liquids, separate different substances or nourish micro-organisms. Not only for the children, a tasting of different sugars was prepared, where we explained to the visitors that sugar is not just a white poison, but that it is a key component of many processes in the human body. Sugars bound to molecular carriers can even help heal, so you might have come to see what dendrimers are good for. Finally, there was an electrolyzer on display that reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to create products useful in the energy or chemical industries. Our nanostructured catalyst on a copper electrode offers extreme stability and the ability to influence the composition of the products by choosing the electrophoresis conditions.
