About the institute

The Institute of Chemical Process Fundamentals of the CAS is a public research institution focused on chemical and environmental engineering and materials chemistry.

In addition to basic and applied research, it supports PhD students and, thanks to its interdisciplinary approach, delivers technological innovations, solutions to environmental challenges, and cooperation between academia, industry, and society.

The institute (originally named the “Institute of Theoretical Foundations of Chemical Engineering – ÚTZCHT”) was formally established within the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1960 from two existing teams that already had a long tradition at the time. The first was the Department of Chemical Technology and the second the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Our story over time

Capsule

Establishment of the Institute

The institute (originally named the “Institute of Theoretical Foundations of Chemical Engineering – ÚTZCHT”) was formally established within the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1960 from two existing teams that already had a long tradition at the time. One was the Department of Chemical Technology at the Institute of Chemistry, led by Professor Vladimír Bažant, and the other the Department of Chemical Engineering, led by Professor George Standart. The former introduced research in the field of organosilicon compounds and heterogeneous catalysis, while the latter continued research on distillation and extraction.

Capsule

Relocation to the New Campus

The Institute completed the construction of a modern research complex in Prague 6 – Lysolaje (Rozvojová Street) and relocated its laboratories and technical facilities. This campus continues to serve as the Institute’s headquarters today.

Capsule

Leadership Transition

Following the passing of Academician Vladimír Bažant in 1973, new leadership took over the management of ICPF, further consolidating the Institute’s position as a leading center for chemical engineering in Central Europe.

Capsule

Post-Revolution Transformation

Following political and social changes, the Institute underwent significant democratization, restructuring, and opening to international cooperation. Under new leadership, research programs were modernized, and collaborations on top-tier international projects were established.

Capsule

Establishment of ICPF under the Czech Academy of Sciences

Following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia and the creation of the independent Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Institute assumed its current official name: Institute of Chemical Process Fundamentals of the CAS (ICPF). The name better reflects its modern focus on chemical, environmental, and biotechnological processes.

Transition to a Public Research Institution (v. v. i.)

In accordance with Act No. 341/2005 Coll., the Institute transformed on January 1, 2007, from a state-subsidized organization into a Public Research Institution (v. v. i.). New self-governing bodies were established, including the Board of the Institute and the Supervisory Board.

Capsule

Expansion of Infrastructure and Environmental Technologies

ICPF significantly expanded its research capabilities in aerosol science, air quality protection, and sustainable chemical technologies. The Institute became a key partner in major national and European research infrastructures (e.g., ACTRIS).

Capsule

HR Award Recognition and Commitment to Diversity

ICPF was awarded the prestigious European HR Excellence in Research Award (HR Award), confirming its commitment to maintaining a transparent, international, and fair working environment. The Institute also approved its first Gender Equality Plan (GEP).
