Interactions of single bubble or drop with a vortex-ring

Abstract:

Turbulent flows containing various turbulent structures occur in a variety of industrial, environmental, geophysical, and naval problems. The presence of bubbles or drops modulate the turbulence and the turbulent structures influence the bubble or drop dynamics. The mechanism of these interactions is poorly understood and is open for fundamental investigation. The simplest way how to study this problem is to investigate the interaction of a single bubble with a single vortex structure (e.g. vortex-ring). The proposed project aims to study the fundamental problem of fluid mechanics, namely the mechanism of single bubble or single drop interactions with a single vortex-ring. The obtained knowledge will help to better understand both the turbulence modulation due to the presence of fluid particles and the fluid particle dynamics after interaction with the turbulent structure.
