Mining the European Anthroposphere

Abstract:

The aim of the proposed project is to analyse the waste incineration solid residues (i.e. bottom ash and fly ash) and other waste materials potential for possible obtaining of critical elements or other important elements and materials. The first step is focused on the solid residues prospection, i.e. determination of the mass flow rates of waste incineration solid residues and other waste materials, along with the determination the content of the selected, particularly critical, elements. For perspective streams of these solid residues a detailed determination of chemical speciation of potentially recoverable elements will be carried out. Considering the variable nature of the waste materials, the variability of the content of potentially recoverable elements with time will be monitored as well as the influence of combustion conditions on the total content and the chemical speciation of these elements. Aims of the project can be therefore summarized as: • to investigate and characterize waste incineration solid residues and other waste materials in terms of quality, quantity and location, • to evaluate waste incineration solid residues and other waste materials in terms of recoverability and reusability, • to classify these secondary sources (waste incineration solid residues and other waste materials) in accordance with existing frameworks for primary sources and compare the sources, • to identify relevant technologies for recovery of these secondary sources including an evaluation of the economic aspects.
