The complex treatment of air pollution control residues from waste-to-energy plant

Abstract:

Flue gas cleaning within WtE generates solid residues, which are classified as hazardous wastes. Currently, the Czech WtE plants produce annually about 15-20 ths tons of these residues while their amount is expected to increase in the future. The current way of their disposal is unsustainable and it is necessary to find management options with lower environmental impacts. Our goal is to develop and design stabilization/solidification methods for these residues, by e.g. addition of various additives (e.g. CO2, FeSO4, NaOH, etc.), pre-treatment using extraction, etc., followed by solidification with geopolymer binders. The goal is to produce a stabilized (non-hazardous) waste/product while the leachability of pollutants would decrease significantly.
