Role of Biogenic Aerosols in Cloud Condensation and Ice Nucleation and its interaction with urban pollution

Abstract:

This project explores how biogenic aerosols influence atmospheric aerosols’ ability to act as CCN and INP in Central Europe. It integrates real-time bioaerosol, CCN, and INP measurements with advanced aerosol chemical and physical characterization at two sites. Longterm in-situ and in-cloud sampling will assess seasonal variability and pollution impacts. Back trajectories and receptor modeling will determine air mass origins and aerosol sources. A thermodenuder will provide insights into the role of volatile vs. non-volatile fractions in CCN/INP activity. The study will also examine how anthropogenic pollution alters the cloud-forming potential of biogenic aerosols via organic matter interactions. By systematically analyzing mixed aerosol interactions (e.g., bacteria + dust, spores + soot), this innovative study will provide unique observational data on biogenic aerosols’ role in cloud formation, addressing key gaps in atmospheric research.
