Considerable attention has recently been paid to the material utilization of waste. The decline of readily available primary resources and the current EU policy aimed at the circular economy and sustainable development increase the demand for new secondary raw materials and modern procedures and technologies for extracting valuable components from them. Fly ash and slag are secondary solid streams generated during waste incineration in waste-to-energy facilities (ZEVO). Fly ash and slag from ZEVO can serve as secondary raw materials, thanks to the produced quantity (annual production of slag in the Czech Republic is 200,000 tons, fly ash 20,000 tons) and the high content of valuable components (e.g. ferrous and non-ferrous metals, salts, minerals). The lecture will present the results of applying modern processing methods to real samples of slag and fly ash from ZEVO. In the case of slag, attention will be focused mainly on physical methods of separation of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, glass and mineral matrix; in the case of fly ash, the subject of interest will be chemical methods of recycling valuable elements (especially Zn, Pb and Cu) and salts (K, Na and Ca chlorides).

Lecture within the project ÚCHP Mobilita II (CZ.02.2.69/0.0/0.0/18_053/0016920)
