Open Science Internships

This year, our Institute has participated in the Open Science internships (https://www.otevrenaveda.cz/cs/index.html). In this programme, secondary grammar school students will be involved in the research that is carried out at our Institute. Two internships have been announced, with 5 enthusiastic students attending them since January.

Three secondary grammar school students – Tomáš Groh, Hynek Hartl and Filip Vrátný – chose an internship within the Open Science programme called “Water Purification from Micropollutants” under the guidance of Martina Dlasková from the Research Group of Catalysis and Reaction Engineering. The last of the three students commutes to our institute in Prague-Lysolaje from Moravia (Rožnov pod Radhoštěm). During their visits to the laboratory, they learn how micropollutants enter the environment, what dangers they pose and what methods are available for cleaning and degrading these substances. The students will also learn about analytical methods for determining micropollutants and learn more about the removal of microplastics from water, which will be introduced by our colleague Markéta Spáčilová.

Another two students – Hedvika Hujerová and Filip Dvořák – chose the internship entitled: “Preparation of cytotoxic organocomplexes of iron and ruthenium with carbohydrate ligands”, which is led by Vojtěch Hamala from the Research Group of Bioorganic Chemistry and Biomaterials. As part of the internship, both students will experience working in the laboratory to develop new organometallic anticancer drugs.
